November is more than just turkey and pumpkin pie. It’s an important month for recognizing and honoring Native American History as we observe Native American Heritage Month. This time allows us to acknowledge the history, traditions, and contributions of indigenous peoples in the United States.
Native Americans have significantly contributed to various fields including art, sports, music, literature, and science. Observing Native American Heritage Month allows us to learn about and celebrate the achievements of people like Sacagawea, Jim Thorpe, and Maria Tallchief.
There is much to discover, learn, and celebrate with roots that stretch worldwide during this month. To support your teaching, we’ve created our suggested book picks for students from Pre-K to 3rd grade.
This month provides an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the diverse traditions and customs of Native American tribes, teaching our students all about the importance of cultural diversity, respect, and inclusivity.
The more we teach our kids about Native American heritage, the more likely they are to appreciate and preserve these rich cultures for generations to come.
